Misdemeanor Mental Health Court

Fulton County provided funding for the implementation of a Misdemeanor Mental Health Court (MMHC) to ensure that individuals with a behavioral health need and arrested for a misdemeanor offense had an opportunity for diversion and care coordination.

The Department, in collaboration with Magistrate & State Courts, initiated a 90 day Pilot MMHC on July 5, 2018 that was designed to achieve the following outcomes:

  • Protect public safety
  • Reduce the incarceration and re-arrest of individuals with a mental health and/or ¬† substance use disorders
  • Link individuals with mental health and/or substance use disorders to services
  • Expect participants to adhere to program conditions and requirements. ¬† The first year goal was 20 participants

The MMHC received 224 referrals for diversion last year & our Department has been funded to continue providing clinical services to the Court in 2019.
