Fulton Fresh Mobile Farmer’s Market Opens 2013 Season on Wednesday, June 12th | Print |

On Wednesday, June 12, 2013, Fulton County Cooperative Extension kicks-off its third season and will hit the road with two mobile units to cover expanded service areas of the Fulton Fresh MobileFarmer’sMarket program. Thekick-off will take place at 10 a.m. at Mt. Vernon Baptist Church located at 441 Martin Luther King Jr. Dr., Atlanta, GA 30313.

The Fulton Fresh program provides fresh produce and nutrition education to residents living in communities identified as “food deserts,” which are large geographic areas where mainstream grocery stores are scarce or missing.  In 2012, Fulton County Cooperative Extension added the second mobile unit to assist more residents with making healthier choices to live healthier lives.

The mobile units will operate on Wednesdays and Thursdays reaching 16 Fulton County communities identified as food deserts. In order to receive the produce, residents must live in the community and attend a nutrition education class that includes a healthy cooking demonstration. The Fulton Fresh Mobile Farmer’s Market program is provided to residents at no cost.

“The Fulton Fresh program is another example of the county’s commitment to address health disparities by improving access to services that help residents with learning how to live healthier lives,” states Menia Chester, Director of Fulton County Cooperative Extension.  The Fulton Fresh Mobile Farmer’s Market 2013 season will run from June 12 until August 28, 2013.
