Fulton County Health Services Encourages All Women to Get Screened for Breast Cancer | Print |

The Fulton County Department of Health and Wellness in collaboration with its partners will hold its Annual Breast Cancer Awareness Event on October 12, 2011, from 10:00am to 2:00pm at the Adamsville Recreation Center located at 3201 Martin Luther King, Jr. Drive in Atlanta.  The department will also sponsor an event from 10:00am – 2:00pm on October 27, 2011 at the North Fulton Government Service Center located at 7741 Roswell Road in Sandy Springs.  Free clinical breast exams, diabetes and HIV screenings will be offered to all participants

“Early detection of breast cancer saves lives,” states Dr. Patrice Harris, Director of the Fulton County Department of Health and Wellness.  “We encourage our residents to utilize our services to get help with screenings.”

Every year, approximately 120 women from Fulton County lose their lives from breast cancer.  Despite advances in technology and screening, in Georgia alone, approximately 1,090 women lose their lives from breast cancer every year, with the majority of women dying from the disease belonging to low income or minority groups. Breast cancer remains the most frequently diagnosed cancer among women in the United States and worldwide (excluding skin cancer), and it is estimated that 1 in every 8 women will be diagnosed with breast cancer during her lifetime.

Women age 40 and older should have a mammogram every year and should continue to do so for as long as they are in good health. While mammograms can miss some cancers, they are still a very good way to find breast cancer.   Women in their 20s and 30s should have a clinical breast exam (CBE) as part of a regular exam by a health expert, preferably every 3 years.

For information about free screening, contact the Fulton County Department of Health and Wellness, Women’s Health Division at (404) 730-1682 or log-on to www.fultoncountygahealth.org.
