Fulton County Adds Funds to Help Residents on HIV Waiting List | Print |

In an effort to help clients on Georgia’s AIDS Drug Assistance Program (ADAP) waiting list, the Fulton County Board of Commissioners allocated an additional $200,000 in its FY 2012 Budget to supplement the county’s HIV Drug Program.  Currently, 275 clients on the ADAP waiting list are enrolled in the Fulton County Ryan White Clinic (RWC).

According to the Georgia Department of Public Health, of the 42,000 identified cases of people living with HIV/AIDS in Georgia, approximately 18,000 are Fulton County residents.  ADAP assists HIV-infected persons with low or moderate incomes and no health insurance.  Drug treatment is a key factor in preventing the HIV virus from developing in to AIDS.  Treatment regimens for HIV require at least 3 different medications, together costing on average $1000 per month.

“The additional funding provided by the Fulton County Board of Commissioners will allow us to immediately treat clients who meet the criteria for starting HIV medications.” states Patrice A. Harris, MD, Fulton Health Services.  “It will provide a needed safety net to ensure that treatment protocol is followed.”

Assistance provided to current and new clients of the Fulton County RWC will be continued through the use of pharmaceutical companies’ Patient Assistance Program (PAP).  It takes approximately 3 months to become eligible for medications through PAP.  Funding provided by the Board of Commissioners will enable clients to receive needed medications while waiting for PAP approval.

“Being able to provide uninterrupted care to clients is vital to our efforts to help them in their battle against this virus,” states Dr. Harris.  “The action of the Board of Commissioners reflects their concern for all residents.”
